چکیده

Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) are evolving towards a more co-operative relationship between the system and the student. More and more, learning is considered as a constructive process rather than a simple transfer of knowledge. This trend has brought to light new cooperative tutoring strategies. One of these tutoring strategies, the learning companion, is designed to overcome some of the limitations of the classical tutoring model; it involves a student and two simulated participants, a tutor and another student. More recently we proposed the learning by disturbing strategy, in which the simulated student is a troublemaker with the role to deliberately disturb the human student. In this article, we describe the learning by disturbing strategy and compare it with that of the learning companion. In addition, we draw links to the psychology of learning and in particular to the cognitive dissonance theory. We develop an indicator that measures discord between the ideas, helping us to pinpoint the concepts that learners most likely misunderstand. This allows us to plan more efficiently the interventions of the troublemaker. Co-operative learning strategies 3

Modalities of Using Learning Objects for

This article details some common characteristics of applications using Intelligent Agents as they relate to Learning Objects as software systems in delivering education. Readapting Learning Objects to different categories of learners constitutes a challenge for Intelligent Agents in their effort to provide a large scale of collaboration between different e-learning organizations. In order not o...

Developing Self-Regulated Learners Through an Intelligent Tutoring System

Intelligent tutoring systems have been developed to help students learn independently. However, students who are poor selfregulated learners often struggle to use these systems because they lack the skills necessary to learn independently. The field of psychology has extensively studied self-regulated learning and can provide strategies to improve learning, however few of these include the use ...

Review of intelligent tutoring systems using bayesian approach

With advancement in computer science research on artificial intelligence and in cognitive psychology research on human learning and performance, the next generation of computerbased tutoring systems moved beyond the simple presentation of pages of text or graphics. These new intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs) called cognitive tutors; incorporated modeltracing technology which is a cognitive mo...

Modeling Strategy Use in an Intelligent Tutoring System: Implications for Strategic Flexibility

Education research has identified strategic flexibility as an important aspect of math proficiency and learning. This aspect of student learning has been largely ignored by Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs). In the current study, we demonstrate how Hidden Markov Modeling can be used to identify groups of students who use similar strategies during tutoring and relate these findings to a measur...

Integrating Case-Based Reasoning and Meta-Learning for a Self-Improving Intelligent Tutoring System

A framework integrating case-based reasoning (CBR) and meta-learning is proposed in this paper as the underlying methodology enabling self-improving intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs). Pedagogical strategies are stored in cases, each dictating, given a specific situation, which tutoring action to make next. Reinforcement learning is used to improve various aspects of the CBR module – cases are...
